( The “Little Venus”, Wax Museum
of Anatomy, Bologna )

Our mothers are lovely.

They are discovered
no more than an hour or so
too late and not far
downriver of the bridge.
They wear nothing but pearl necklaces,
their golden hair leafy
in the green water.

Watchmen raise them
like Venus but no-one knows
their names then or ever.
They were close to term and
healthy, and anatomists, artists in wax
adore them. You will see
her belly is a lid.

Lift it and find me.
